Some things naturally go together like great rock music and really cool cars. There are many songs that are about cars in general such “Drive My Car” by The Beatles, “Highway Star” by Deep Purple and “No Particular Place to Go” by Chuck Berry. However, some songs are a bit more specific, showing love for one particular automobile model.
“Little Deuce Coupe” by The Beach Boys
One of the best songs about a car is this Beach Boys’ classic from 1963, originally released as the B-side to their hit “Surfer Girl”. Filled with boastful lyrics despite the singer’s claim that he is not bragging, the song’s references to flathead mills and lake pipes showed the band knew about more than just surfing. This song about a Ford V-8 Roadster would prove so popular that the next Beach Boys’ album again featured the song, this time as the title track.
“El Camino” by Ween
The Chevrolet El Camino was a car some people just did not get. The same could be probably said about the band Ween. However, fans of the band, just like fans of the car, are as dedicated and loyal as you will ever find. This song is a tribute to that odd vehicle that is part car and part pickup truck but also features the Chrysler Cordoba and the Oldsmobile Toronado as well.
“Black Sunshine” by White Zombie
Black Zombie’s tale of a super-charged V-8 Ford Mustang will send shivers up your spine while simultaneously getting your toes tapping. Like many of the band’s tunes, the song evokes images of 50′s B-grade horror flicks and hot rods burning rubber at the drag strip. When listening to this opus while driving, it is hard to keep the pedal off the floor.
“Slick Black Cadillac” by Quiet Riot
This song originally appeared on Quiet Riot’s second album, released only in Japan and the last to feature guitarist Randy Rhoads who would move on to join Ozzy Osbourne’s band. The band re-recorded the song for their third album, Metal Health, which would be their first album in the United States and would become the first 80′s metal album to reach the top spot on the Billboard Top 200 album chart.
“Rollin’ in My Rolls” by Moon Martin and the Ravens
Another luxury car that gets some attention is the Rolls Royce. Moon Martin’s tribute to the car was inspired by the Rolls owned by Elvis Presley. In the song, he expresses his desire to own “the smoothest ride alive” and states that he would rather have a Rolls than a sports car. Clearly the connection between rock and roll and cool cars go beyond a simple need for speed.
“Mercury Blues” by The Steve Miller Band
Originally written in 1949 as “Mercury Boogie,” this song would be covered by many artists, but from a rock and roll point of view it hard to beat Steve Miller’s 1976 version. The song tells of how buying a Ford Mercury would make life perfect by winning back the girl stolen by a man who drove a Mercury.
There you have a few of the best rock songs about specific car brands. Cars are one of the most popular subjects for songwriters and there have been many other great car songs and there will certainly be many more written in the future. Next time you hit the road in your favorite auto, be sure to take along some tunes to make the ride an adventure.
