Audi decided that the current energy storage technology is not advanced enough to guarantee an efficient autonomy to the future R8 e-tron. This made the germans postpone the launch of the serie’s version for an indefinite period.
Although they seemed to own one of the most powerful electric offensives in the premium segment, Audi has weaknesses. These weaknesses come up when we talk about the peak of the e-tron serie: the R8 supercar.
An Audi spokesman stated for the British publication AutoExpress that the new R8 launch has been postponed fon an indefinite period. ” For now, we already built 10 prototypes of the future R8 e-tron. They are still being analysed by our specialists to establish their weak points”, declared the spokesman.
He also recognized that the main reson behind the delayed launch of this model was the battery autonomy. ” Our engineers were worried about the limited autonomy of the pure electric vehicles, equipped with the current battery generation. That is why we stopped the production.”
Even if, for now, there are no good news, the project will be reopened in the future. Its future depends on the improvement of the current technology.
Audi R8 e-tron could have used e lithium-ion battery with a 48.6 kWh capacity, sufficient to maintain two electric engines on a 215 km distance. The two engines have a 380 HP and a torque of 820 Nm, sufficient for a sprint from 0 to 100 Km/H in 4.2 seconds and a maximum speed of 200 Km/H.
